Top 5 Winter Driving Tips

As winter has well and truly set upon us and Christmas is only a couple of weeks away, every driver needs to take extra care and precautions while out on the UK’s roads. At Absolute Deliveries, we deliver vehicles all over the UK and clock up 1,000’s of miles a month, by taking time and preparing vehicles properly before every trip, we ensure the safety for our drivers, customers and other road users. Here are our top 5 tips for Winter Driving

Top Tip 1 – Plan Your Trips
We’re in the digital age of Satellite Navigation where most drivers simply plug in the Sat Nav, type the destination and set off, but still take time to plan the trip, ensuring you know the basic route you need to take. A Sat Nav is great for the final 1/3 of your trip but knowing the main route will stop any last minute changes of lanes or u-turns which can become lethal in dark, wet or snowy conditions.

Top Tip 2 – Prepare Your Vehicle
Final checking your vehicles levels for water, oil and lights are crucial for an incident free trip. As the nights are longer during British winter time, your vehicle needs fully working lights and by topping up oil and water you will reduce the chance of a vehicle breakdown. There is nothing worse than the engine oil light flickering on and you’re stranded in the middle of the countryside in freezing cold weather.

Top Tip 3 – Carry the Essentials
Make sure the boot of your vehicle is stocked up with the essentials, by that we mean the following
1.      An hazard warning triangle,
2.      Small shovel,
3.      High visibility jacket,
4.      Blanket and Winter clothing
5.      Torch
6.      De-Icing Kit (Scrapers, and spray)

Top Tip 4 – Check Your Tyres
Tyres that are partially or completely worn away will be less effective in wet, icy or snowy conditions. The extra grip of a new tyre will mean the difference of a few yards in breaking distance, which could be life-saving. The minimum tread on a tyre is 1.6mm

Top Tip 5 – Keep Your Distance
On icy roads, simply leave as much space between you and the car in front as possible whilst taking care when driving around corners or at junctions. Stopping distances are at least twice as long in ice and snow than normal condition's breaking

By considering these tips everytime you drive will help in keeping you and your family safe throughout this winter period.

Merry Christmas

Congratulations to PDSA - Pets In Need Of Vets

As you've guessed from our previous posts (Ouch It's Hot) Absolute Deliveries Owners Paul and Sue like to fund raise and help out for charity whenever they can. By supporting a number of charities including Birmingham Children's Hospital, St. Giles Hospice and PDSA, we are delighted to offer our support to some great causes.

We were recently asked to help PDSA in it's bid to win 'The Vote That Counts', a competition among nine leading UK charities. We're delighted to announce that the PDSA won, meaning a whopping £50,000 windfall to help them treat even more beloved pets in need of care.

The £50,000 will enable them to fund the ambitious 'Preventing the Preventable' campaign, allowing them to deliver 3,500 life saving care packages for some of the most vulnerable pets within the UK.

The PDSA is a wonderful charity and as a nation of pet lovers, provide an important role for owners who cannot afford some of the expensive veterinary bills their pets need.

If you would like more information and help out with the PDSA, visit their website.

A little support goes a long way.

Time for HGV Investment?

TNT have Invested in 300 New HGV's
Following the recent announcement from TNT that is was investing in 300 new HGV’s for it’s delivery service, are haulage and delivery companies finally starting to re-invest in their fleets?
As the UK’s economic outlook is slowly improving, firms are looking to update their fleets following a number of years of consolidation and vehicle sale stagnation, with fuel economy and aerodynamic advantages being high on the priority feature list.
According to SMMT ( HGV sales over 6 tonnes vehicles had increased by over 25% compared to Sept ’12 with 3.5tonne to 6tonnne vehicles sales increased by just over 6%. Absolute Deliveries have ourselves seen an uplift in new vehicle deliveries, having delivered our highest number during September ’13.
Absolute Deliveries delivered new Dennis Eagle Refuse Trucks
The recent announcement by the Top 4 Supermarkets to slash their prices for fuel will only aid in the recovery and support the haulage industry further. Hopefully this shows that the economic outlook for the haulage industry is improving and we’re looking for steady improvement through 2014 also.

If you’re looking for vehicle trade plate deliveries, please feel free to call 0845 074 3325  for a competitive, no obligation quote.

Ouch it's Hot raising funds for St. Giles Hospice

Sue Jay, one half (some say better half) of Absolute Deliveries, is fundraising for St. Giles Hospice by taking a death-defying fire-walking task on the 8th November 2013. The fire-walk is an ancient rite of passage that has been practised by civilisations around the globe for centuries, and it’s said to be one of the most inspirational journeys a person can make. That said, it also can be very hot and painful so will take all of Sue's courage and determination to complete.

Ouch this is hot
St. Giles Hospice is a wonderful charity, set up to provide high-quality medical and nursing care for local people living with cancer and other serious illnesses, as well as offering support for their families and helpers.
The dedicated team provides individually-tailored care either at the hospice or in patients' own homes across the region.
The range of specialist services is provided free of charge to all who need it. Although St Giles receives some funding from the Government, the charity relies heavily on donations and fundraising.

Sue is hoping to raise over £1000 for this great charity and any donations, small or large would be gratefully receive. To donate please visit Sue's Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/SueJay05 and lets smash this target.
It's all for a good cause

Freezing Fuel Duty - But Is That Enough?

Less To Pay At The Pumps

George Osborne and the Conservatives have again announced a fuel duty tax freeze until 2015, but is this going far enough?

The UK already has one of the highest diesel fuel price across Europe (only the poor Norweigans and Italians have higher) so freezing the proposed duty increase until 2015 will not have a dramatic effect on your wallet.

Lower Fuel Duty Would Mean Less Of This
The freeze will save drivers spending an extra 3p per litre at the pumps or on average losing 15 miles per full tank, which does not seem a lot. It has been argued by FairFuelUK that actually cutting fuel duty by 3p would create around 70,000 more jobs and grow the economy by 0.2% which to us sounds like a better solution to our economic problems

UK’s high fuel prices affect everyone, not just drivers. Increasing fuel costs have directly contributed to a higher cost of living, from your packet of cereal in a supermarket to the latest smart phone in a high street store, all need to be transported  and in turn prices are increased due to fuel costs.

The UK transport industry has been hit hard by high fuel duty. It currently employs over 2 million people but has struggled to compete with European companies who have lower fuel prices and many haulage businesses have vanished with people losing their jobs.

It’s time we had a level playing field with the rest of European and a fuel price that will encourage our economy to grow and secure future businesses and jobs.
